Course Summary:
Children with autism often face unique challenges in the dental setting due to communication differences, sensory sensitivities, and difficulty with transitions. In this interactive panel session, pediatric specialists from UCSF will introduce autism-informed dental care strategies that can be used in any dental office. Presenters will share real-world examples, tools, and outcomes from UCSF’s interdisciplinary desensitization program, and offer practical tips that general dentists and staff can adopt to improve care. The session will conclude with extended Q&A to support attendees in applying concepts to their own practice.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this session, participants will be able to:
- Describe common behavioral and sensory characteristics of children with autism relevant to dental care.
- Identify communication and environmental strategies to support children with autism during dental visits
- Apply at least two autism-informed tools (e.g., visual schedules, happy visits, sensory supports) in their own practice setting.
- Recognize the value of interdisciplinary and individualized approaches to improve patient comfort and outcomes.
